In Lara's words
What happens in the room
There are six reformers in the room and that is the class. When you come in for a group, one of them is already set for you: the footbar at your height, the headrest where your neck likes it, and springs I chose after watching you through your Arranque privates. For fifty minutes I walk between the six of you, and from wherever I stand I can see every knee and every rib cage. That is the whole reason for keeping it small, and it is why I have never added a seventh machine, however often I am asked.
Each class runs fifty minutes. We begin lying down with footwork, because ten heels and ten toes tell me how everybody's day has gone, then move into the work for that week and finish sitting or standing, so nobody walks out stiff. Springs change during the class, but never by guesswork. If your hip was grumbling last Thursday and we came down from heavy to medium, I know, because it is written on your card and I read the cards before the door opens.
Most people who lie down on these carriages spend their days at a desk, or are coming back from an injury with their physio's note in hand, or are starting in their sixties and want a teacher who remembers their name next week. Nobody is here to sweat through a playlist. The room is quiet, the springs are the loudest thing in it, and before this website the timetable you can now read on this page was a sheet of paper taped inside the window.
From the method page
The method, in brief
I teach the same seven steps to everyone who walks in, whether they are 31 or 74. Here are the first three, cut down to a few lines each. The full page takes all seven slowly, the way they happen across your first weeks.
Listen before the springs. The first twenty minutes of your first Arranque are talk. I watch you walk across the room and sit down. No machine yet.
Feet on the bar. Footbar height and headrest set for your body, then neutral pelvis, with a folded towel under the sacrum if your back asks for one.
Choosing springs. Heavy, medium, light and feather. Heavier is often easier because it holds you up. Light is often harder because you have to control every centimetre.
One day of the week
A normal Tuesday
Six classes, fifty minutes each, six reformers in every one. The doors open at 07:15 so the first group can be on the carriages by half past. This is the full timetable for most of the year. In July the only Tuesday evening class is Strong at 19:00, and the room closes for Aste Nagusia in the second half of August.
